Project Summary:

Government of Nepal with assistance from ADB is implementing urban water supply system in Kathmandu Valley. The executing agency for the project is the Ministry of Urban Development (MOUD) later Ministry of water supply and Implementing agency is Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited, Project Implementation Directorate (PID).

Government of Nepal (GON) has been executing infrastructure development works under Loan 1820- NEP with the assistance of ADB and other partners, and will be extending infrastructure improvements (including this Contract) further under Loan 2776- NEP. Water system improvement to be implemented under Subproject 2 falls under several broad categories:

·       Bulk Distribution System Improvements

·       Service Reservoirs

·       Distribution Network Improvement

·       Rehabilitation of Existing:

Ø  Surface Water Sources

Ø  Transmission Mains

Ø  Water Treatment Plants

Ø  Service Reservoirs

The Distribution Network Improvement For Efficient NRW Management- Package -1 lies within the Kathmandu Valley, which is intended with new network of water supply system within different wards of Kathmandu and Lalitpur Municipality. Our project has three site namely DNI-1, DNI-2, DNI-6 where DNI-1 is surrounded by Bisnumati River on the west and South, DNI-2 includes Dhobi Khola and Bagmati River on the East and DNI-6 has Jawalakhel on the North-West and Patan Industrial Estate on the South-East along with the Ring Road on the South-East and South- West. The Current piped water supply demand in Kathmandu Valley, including unaccounted for water, is estimated to be over 320 million liters per day (MLD). However, the combined production capacity of the groundwater and surface water sources in the dry season is reported to be about 100 MLD and even in the wet season, the production capacity is reported only to reach 150 MLD.

Under these water shortage conditions, KUKL has applied a rationing system whereby water is allowed to flow to different section of the Metropolitan/urban area in rotation. As most areas receive intermittent supply with low pressure, use of pumps to suck water and bypassing of water meters are believed to be quite common techniques used by consumers. Water quality at the consumer’s end is far less than desired and it is a common practice to treat or boil water before drinking or cooking.

Since this Project is being introduced to upgrade existing water supply system within Kathmandu Valley and ultimately by integration into Melamchi water, better quality of everyday life of city dwellers is expected.

The project has been divided into three locations DNI-1, DNI-2 and DNI-6 respectively. Water supply reticulation over the project site is designed to enhance by adding up 1000mm, 900 mm, 800mm, 700mm, 600mm, 500mm and 400mm dia. Primary Main (DI pipe) as supply mains, 300mm, 250mm, 200mm and 150mm dia. Secondary Main (DI pipe) and 110mm, 90mm and 75mm dia. Tertiary Main (HDPE pipe) of total of 302 km approximately.
